February 2008 log

reading summary: 8 total; 3 manga, 1 ya fantasy, 1 fantasy, 1 science fiction, 2 mystery; 1 unfinished; 2 reread (both mystery, 1 unintentionally). I think I started a couple of others and got distracted; maybe I should spend less time on line and read more books (and either watch more things from netflix or cut my subscription down); also, I should stop letting things sit as drafts for months.

Read
Tramps Like Us v14, Yayoi Ogawa (own) — the end, sadly; the resolution was in v13, and this was wrapping everything up. I have all the volumes; if I can find them I’ll reread it now that it’s complete (and find the drama and watch it again).
From Eroica With Love v9, Yasuko Aoike (own) — I need to catch up; I don’t know why I didn’t get this sooner (v8 was January 2007, v11 was December)
Flora Segunda: Being the Magickal Mishaps of a Girl of Spirit, Her Glass-Gazing Sidekick, Two Ominous Butlers (One Blue), a House with Eleven Thousand Rooms, and a Red Dog, Ysabeau S. Wilce (library)
Pet Shop of Horrors: Tokyo v1, Matsuri Akino (own) — more of the same; I miss Leon, though.
Expecting Someone Taller, Tom Holt (library) — didn’t finish; not bad, just not my sort of thing; humor is very subjective
A Murder is Announced, Agatha Christie (library) — because I rented it and wanted to compare
The Case of the Gilded Lily, Erle Stanley Gardner (library) — I think I read this years ago; I didn’t remember the murderer (thought somebody else was), but remembered a pivotal incident and the later really dodgy messing with evidence.
Spaceman Blues: a love song, Brian Francis Slattery (library) — I really liked this and am trying to figure out why

Watched
Agatha Christie’s Marple: Series 1: A Murder is Announced (netflix)
Bleach, v3 (netflix, episodes 9-12) — had it on in the background; I’d read the corresponding bits of the manga. I’ll leave v4 in my queue, but I don’t know if I’ll continue; I don’t think I have the patience to watch a long shounen series like this any more.
Torchwood, v1 (netflix, episodes 1-2 “Everything Changes” and “Day One”) — I watched the first episode ages ago, and bogged down on the second; I developed an irrational dislike towards Gwen in the first episode and did not want to see her messing up on her first day. I couldn’t bring myself to skip it entirely, though, and so watched parts of it on fast-forward (yay subtitles!). I did like Gwen when she was snarky; I didn’t like her when she was confused and didn’t see why she was a shining example to remind them of their humanity. I liked Jack angsting over the hand in the jar.
Tsubasa The Movie: The Princess in the Birdcage Kingdom — a short (35 min) story in the search for Sakura’s feathers; enjoyable, but nothing special. I stopped watching the dub very quickly; Syaoran’s voice was annoying, and Mokona’s was painful. I was glad to know there was a reason the king made me think of the count in Gankutsuou; the character designs were both kind of generic bad guy with goatee and elaborate costume (not really similar, though), and the voice (Jouji Nakata) was the same. I didn’t think I’d watched enough of Gankutsuou in Japanese to associate his voice with that character, though.
Zigzo – The Last Scene — parts of. a very different feel from the First Scene, unsurprisingly. Sakura should not be blond (and I bet that’s most people’s first reaction to this).

Acquired
Tramps Like Us v14, Yayoi Ogawa (new) — the end, sadly.
From Eroica With Love v9, Yasuko Aoike (new) — padding for free shipping for an order, though the other part was canceled by Amazon, eventually but unsurprisingly (that’s the third time; there are two separate listings on amazon.com, and I ordered it once from amazon.jp; maybe I should have held out for the flaky third-party seller instead of canceling when it was obvious they did not, despite stating so, have it in stock; I’m not spending $40+ (a different 3rd party on amazon or other label) for a $20 CD)
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle v16, CLAMP (new) — must find 15 before reading
Pet Shop of Horrors: Tokyo v1, Matsuri Akino (new)

The Murder at the Vicarage, Agatha Christie (used) — because it was .25 and I didn’t have it

A Murder is Announced, Agatha Christie (library) — to skim and compare
Spaceman Blues, Brian Francis Slatterly (library) — someone mentioned it and it sounded interesting
The Case of the Gilded Lily, Erle Stanley Gardner (library) — because the above was at a branch that actually had some of his books (and I realized that older branches are more likely to have older books)
Tooth and Claw, Jo Walton (library) — because I’d been wanting to read it and successfully used the library’s hold system to get it at the branch by my house (last time I tried, it didn’t work for some reason, but I got the book for Christmas anyway)
City of Bones, Cassandra Clare (library) — because it was there; might read it, might not (and returned it without ever opening it)
Interworld, Neil Gaiman and Michael Reaves (library)

Bleach, v3 (netflix)
Agatha Christie’s Marple: Series 1: A Murder is Announced (netflix)
Torchwood, v1 (netflix)
Mushishi, v2 (netflix)
The Avengers ’65, v4 (netflix)
Tsubasa The Movie: The Princess in the Birdcage Kingdom (netflix) — part of the Tsubasa/xxxHOLiC double feature; I wasn’t paying attention and was disappointed that xxxholic was not included; apparently they released it as a two-disc set.
