April 2010 log

I’ve been trying to read things I own but have never read, and read four this month; I read 15 1/2 books this month: 8 1/2 new and the rest reread. I’m still not writing about things as I read them, though; maybe someday I will.

  1. Dorothy Sayers – The Nine Tailors (library, reread) — used to own, but got lost in the move
  2. Rosemary Edghill – Bell, Book, and Murder (own, reread) — omnibus of her three Bast mysteries set among the Wiccan/Pagan/occult community in New York
  3. George MacDonald – Lilith (own, started in March)
  4. Gilgamesh – Stephen Mitchell version (own)
  5. Charles de Lint – The Little Country (own, reread)
  6. Liz Williams – Nine Layers of Sky (own)
  7. Maria V. Snyder – Storm Glass (library) — does not say anywhere that it’s even in the same world as the … Study books, but it’s set four years later; the lead from those is not the main character, but does appear here, and I would assume the events that traumatized this lead were in those somewhere. It’s technically a stand-alone novel; reading the earlier ones wasn’t necessary to understanding this one (I read only the first years ago), but the constant mention of four years ago was really annoying. I wouldn’t have read this at this time had I known it was so closely related to the earlier series; I’d have read them instead.
  8. Jasper Fforde – Lost in a Good Book (library, reread) — and I don’t know why I feel the need to read these after I got rid of them
  9. Catherynne M. Valente – In the Night Garden (library)
  10. John Scalzi – The God Engines (library)
  11. Liz Williams – The Poison Master (own)
  12. Matt Ruff – Bad Monkeys (own, reread)
  13. Patricia C. Wrede – Dealing with Dragons (library, reread) — another case of wanting to reread something I no longer own
  14. Maria V. Snyder – Poison Study (library, reread)
  15. Catherynne M. Valente – In the Cities of Coin and Spice (library)
  16. Elizabeth Bear – By the Mountain Bound (library)
